We Should All Get 8 Hours of Sleep EverydayYou may think that this topic is boring because you already know the importance of getting enough sleep and agree with my topic already. However, most of you guys still stay up very late and are not getting sleep for 8 hours. After my presentation today, I challenge at least 80% of you to get 8 hours of sleep tonight. Here, I’ll tell you three reasons why you should all get 8 hours of sleep.First of all, If any of you are on a diet or losing weight, lack of sleep could actually cause you to gain weight instead. Think about it, if you’re falling asleep when you’re studying, you may wanna have a cup of coffee, muffin or some snacks for a quick energy boost. When your body starts using up your energy, you’ll just automatically go for some comfort food like chocolate or candy.  You may be able to get rid of the sleepiness immediately. However, the eventual result could be unwanted weight gain because of your unhealthy diet and maybe further sleep loss. If you do change your sleeping habits to that of having enough sleep, your body will make adjustments and assist your effort to lose weight. You will feel less hungry than you normally do and you’ll also feel full faster than usual. Moreover, sleep can also help you protect and strengthen your memory. I assume that most of you stay up late to study and that’s how you fail to make sleep a priority. Research shows that people who are sleep-deprived tend to have a harder time receiving information due to overworking the brain’s neurons and they may interpret information differently. You may have already experienced working late at night and having trouble concentrating on whatever it is that you have to do. Getting less sleep could interfere with your work performance and it becomes even more difficult for you to study in the future since you haven’t paid attention in class. Therefore, you should make sure that you are able to get enough sleep first so you can focus in class and use your spare time to review the course materials and do the homework. Lastly,There are actually some potential health risks of insufficient sleep that can affect your whole body. As I’ve mentioned before, too little sleep can cause memory issues, trouble concentrating and thinking, and could also make you very moody and emotional. A lack of sleep can even make you sick, as it weakens your immune system’s defenses against viruses like those that cause the common cold and flu, and your risk of high blood pressure could increase as well. Besides that, with sleep deprivation, you could have higher blood sugar level and an increased risk of diabetes and obesity. It’s even likely that your balance and coordination would be affected by lack of sleep as well, which could make you prone to fall and other physical injuries. Even more shocking, a review of 16 studies have found that constantly sleeping for less than 6 to 8 hours a night increases the risk of early death by about 12%. The best way to ensure that you can get enough sleep is to have a consistent bedtime and wake up time. Or you can download an app called “Go To Bed”, which reminds you when it’s your bedtime and track your sleep. The most interesting thing is that you can use your facebook account to login to the app and compete against your facebook friends. There is a leaderboard where you’ll see how much sleep you and your friends get on average over the last week. There are more features that you can find out when you download the app.
