This reflective essay has
increased my awareness as a final year student nurse who is about to qualify as
a registered nurse. It has increased the need to improve my skills in the area
of assertiveness, effective communication and role modelling in accordance with
NMC (2015) Code of Conduct which states that student nurses must demonstrate
they have required skills to make clinical decisions which will improve the
safety of patients.

Continuous professional
development is my responsibility and is integral to me providing safe patient
care and remaining on the register as a nurse (NMC, 2017). Also, I would need
to undergo training in order to develop essential skills such as effective
communication. Connolly et al. (2014) states that it is possible to develop and improve effective communication skills
through training. To further develop my communication skills, I
would use the situation background assessment recommendation (SBAR) tool which
improves communication, effective escalation and increases safety of patients (Achrekar et al., 2016). Furthermore,
I am now able to be assertive whereas in previous placements I have not been
assertive. I have learned that assertiveness is a necessary skill that enables
student nurses to advocate successfully on behalf of their patients. I would
need to develop in this area by attending training courses (Omura et al., 2017).
All these have made me realise some of the areas I would need to develop during
my preceptorship when I resume as a newly qualified nurse.

Although I was able to act as
a positive role model to Sheila, I should have spoken politely to her and not
allowed her to see me angry. Hunt (2014) states that speaking in a polite and
direct manner is necessary for successful delegation. Additionally, Edwards
(2017) states that student nurses must manage their emotions in a way that
promotes compassion and care and resonates with their identity.

I was able to act as a
positive role model as a result of the knowledge I have gained over the years,
the different exposure, and the time I have spent training as a student nurse
over the last 3 years (Güner, 2014).

I was able to take charge,
manage the ward and made sure Joan was safe. This gave me the opportunity to inspire
confidence and provide clear direction to Sheila (ref).
Sheila watched me call the ward doctor to assess Joan whose health was
deteriorating though the observations were within the agreed limits and the
NEWS was 0. I was able to speak confidently to other members of the
multi-disciplinary team. An example was inviting the doctor to assess the patient.
I was articulate and able to explain observations and get the doctor to take
the required action. I was also able to delegate to the student nurse

Bramhall (2014) states that
effective communication is a crucial skill which enables healthcare
practitioners to communicate honestly, clearly, without undue avoidance, stress
or aggression. In the given scenario, I communicated with and delegated to
Sheila effectively, which avoided stress and enhanced Joan’s safety.

I was articulate, provided
clear direction and also inspired confidence when Sheila was unsure about the
guidelines. Nurses must keep up-to-date with evidence-based practice and have a
duty to teach others (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2015). I was confident and
in charge of the situation. This led to patient safety and the right outcome
(Gluyas, 2015).

I practised effective
communication when I requested the urgent / immediate assessment of Joan. Calling
the ward doctor and making sure he understood me and came over to assess Joan showed
I communicated effectively. This was supported by Trifkovi? et al. (2017) &
Lewis (2014) who assert that effective communication is the transfer of
information between two people. I also communicated effectively with Sheila
when I delegated to her and the task was done.

Vinales (2015) states that role
modelling allows novice student nurses to work alongside and emulate senior
qualified nurses in developing through clinical competencies and required skills
during their nurse education. Taking charge of the bay as a student nurse and confidently
handling every step was a model for Sheila. I acted as a role model by working
with Sheila so she can observe and learn how to handle difficult situations and
ensure patient safety.
