In the movie Machine Gun Preacher, about Sam Childers, he testified that he was being chased by a group of guys and knew they were out to get him, and he normally had a shotgun in his bag, and he was chased to a tree and tried to pull out that shotgun but he pulls out a Bible. His mom had taken the shotgun out and placed a Bible in there. And the group of guys chasing him ran by him and kept going. He knew God was watching out for him. And he knew he had to get in the Word.
What’s first in our life?
Kathy woke up earlier and spent time with Him first and He rewarded her with more time and better time with her family. Her goal is to grow closer to Jesus…is that our goal? Is that my goal?
I set goals, like a goal to drop so much weight, or for the studs out there, a goal to lift 300 pounds! To bench-press more than my body weight!
Or, a goal to get all As in school. But in order to do that I need a plan, on when and where and how to do my homework and studies. I won’t get all As if its just a goal and not planned out.
So in my relationship with God, my goal is Jesus first. So a plan can be, get up early and spend time with Him. Go through a reading plan on Youversion, journal with Him, Son-bathe. Get in the Word.
On my journey to God I ended up in the hospital. An emergency appendectomy. It had exploded. When the appendix bursts all they do is go in an vacuum it all out, and if any bit of the poison stays there it can kill you. Usually people go in and the appendix is taken out and they can walk home that day, but when it bursts your time is short. I was on short time.
So I was in the hospital for a few days and I read the Bible. And every time I read the Bible I felt my spirit get warm, tingly, excited. Full. I sensed the Presence of God. It was a wake up call for me, because I hadn’t been serving the Lord like I was supposed to. But this is part of my journey, I knew what Bible reading does to my insides, to my spirit. I carried a Gideon pocket NT with me everywhere in my back pocket. And if I had a moment I’d open up its pages and read, hungry for what it had to say, sensing the Presence of God on me. I had to ‘Get in the Word!’
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
God breathed-Breath-hooo–breath, wind, mind, spirit.
When God created Adam in the Garden of Eden it says he breathed into the man and the man became a living being. When we see some of God’s names, Ruach Elohim, means Spirit of God. Or Ruach Hakkodesh in Psalm 51:11 which means ‘Holy Spirit’.
So concerning God’s word, it is God-breathed, Holy Spirit empowered. And when we read it, it teaches us, trains us, rebukes us, corrects us–when I read Colossians 3:8 which says, “But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these; anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips,” I go, gulp, I gotta change my attitude, gotta not gossip, gotta not cuss or be part of filthy jokes. Gotta work on this by His Spirit.
Back to 2 Timothy 3:16-17…We must get in the Word in order that we are equipped for ‘every’ good work. It doesn’t say ‘some’ but ‘every good work’.
Only the Word of God can change your life! Do you know why?
When you read the word of God you are reading Jesus!
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Alive and active! God breathed! When we read the Bible we read Jesus who is alive, and Holy Spirit is active, piercing our thoughts and emotions and attitudes of our heart. Tis is talking about a person, alive and active. Mere words on a page aren’t alive and active. But words empowered by Him, about Him, through Him are alive because it is reading Him. That is life-change!
The next time you flip open the Bible and read, read it like you are reading Jesus, because you are! Read it like it is alive, because He is! This revelation changed everything for me; get in the Word!
Most powerful Holy Spirit,
come down upon us
and subdue us.
where the ordinary
is made glorious,
and glory seems
with the brilliance
of your light
