Friends of God

I Am Second Video-Doug Bender.

Proverbs says, “There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother”(Proverbs 18:24).

God created the heavens and the earth and He walked in the cool of the day with Adam. From the very beginning God wanted friendship with His creation, with Mankind. His desire was for Man to also choose to love Him back. If He wanted it to be a one way relationship He would have created robots in the beginning, but because of His love He gave Man free-will. Each of us have a choice, the biggest decision in our lives is whether or not we will be His friend.

Jesus said, “I no longer call you servants(slaves), but friends(John 15:14-17).

Greater love has no one than this, that he lays down his life for his friends(John 15:13).

In the movie Act of Valor, we see the feats of Navy Seals, from hanging out together with their families on the beach, straight to combat and one dangerous situation after another, maintaining that bond of friendship, and the moment of sacrifice for his friends. The grenade…Jesus did that for us! He took the grenade of the enemy, died on the cross and rose from the dead!

Jesus laid down His life for us because he wanted to make the way for us to be His friends, to have eternal life in Heaven but also friendship here on earth. He made the way for us to be friends with Him.

See, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and chose to eat the forbidden fruit, a wall immediately rose up between mankind and God. And in order for Man to reach God, who is perfect, God set down laws. And these laws showed Man he couldn’t reach God alone, but needed someone perfect to take Man’s place. In stepped Jesus! God in the flesh, perfect, without wrongdoing, without sin. And He laid down His life for us.

See, its like we were each taken to court, and the prosecutor accused us of everything we have ever done wrong, lying, cheating, stealing, cussing. The evidence was overwhelming that we were guilty. But in came our defense attorney, and he made a deal with the judge; the deal was He would take our place, He would take our punishment for our crimes, for our wrongdoing. And we’d be let go….Jesus did that. And He did it for us to be free and be His friend.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lays down his life for his friends(John 15:13).

Jesus laid down His life for each one of us and rose from the dead. Out of love, out of desiring to be our friend.

God spoke to Moses face to face as a friend(Exodus 33). Jesus calls us friends. We are to be His friend. We don’t just call our friends when times get tough do we? No. We call them daily, talk to them, hang out. Thats what we are to do with Jesus. Pray, meditate on scripture, think about Him, ponder Him, read the Bible, dance in our living room with Him, invite Him to watch you write poems or stories of Him or show Him your watercolors or face-paint. Friendship.

The creator of the universe wants to be your best friend.
